Comparison of patient reported outcomes following clavicle operative fixation using supraclavicular nerve sparing and supraclavicular nerve sacrificing techniques– A cohort study

Huang D, Cheng J, Bong YR, et al. - In this study, numbness, patient-reported outcomes, and surgical time were compared in patients undergoing clavicle open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) applying supraclavicular nerve-sparing and supraclavicular nerve sacrificing techniques. Researchers performed a retrospective cohort study with a prospective survey of 108 patients with clavicular fractures treated with ORIF at a level 1 trauma centre. Individuals were classified into two groups: ORIF with supraclavicular nerve-sparing techniques and ORIF with supraclavicular nerve sacrificing techniques. The results illustrate that identification and protection of the supraclavicular nerves result in significantly less numbness following clavicle ORIF but does not influence patient-reported functional outcomes.
