Comparison of patient-reported outcomes based on implant brand in total knee arthroplasty
The Bone & Joint Journal Jul 05, 2019
Kahlenberg CA, et al. - Through 4,135 subjects who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using one of the five most common brands of the posterior-stabilized implant, the researchers intended to assess the patient-reported outcomes and satisfaction after primary TKA in patients with osteoarthritis. No clinically important differences in the change of Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score from baseline to a two-year follow-up among any of the groups could be observed. In all domains, more than 80% of patients in each group were delighted at this time. Hence, despite the type of implant, TKA produced improvement in function and satisfaction. Across these groups of implants, the advantage of one design above others could not be judged with no justification for any price premium for one above the other systems. Therefore, when adjusting purchasing contracts, healthcare administrators could discover these similarities in outcomes beneficial.
