Comparison of pancreatic volume and fat amount linked with glucose homeostasis between healthy Caucasians and Koreans
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Jun 30, 2018
Roh E, et al. - Researchers compared pancreatic volume and amount of fat, along with their relationships with glucose homeostasis between healthy Caucasians and Koreans. This study was conducted on 43 healthy Koreans and 43 healthy Caucasians. Using bioimpedance and indirect calorimetry, body composition and resting energy expenditure (REE) were assessed. Pancreatic volume in Caucasians was larger than that in Koreans, while pancreatic fat content in Koreans was 22.8% greater than in Caucasians. Koreans had significantly lower insulinogenic index, disposition index, muscle mass, and REE. The study findings suggested that vs Caucasians with similar body mass index (BMI) and body fat levels, a smaller pancreas and relatively greater fat deposition could be crucial determinants of vulnerability to diabetes in Koreans.
