Comparison of outcomes following laparoscopic and open treatment of emergent small bowel obstruction: An 11-year analysis of ACS NSQIP
Surgical Endoscopy Jun 08, 2018
Patel R, et al. - Differences in outcomes following laparoscopic and open treatment of emergent small bowel obstruction (SBO) were determined via identifying patients that underwent emergent or non-elective surgery for SBO from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. Analysis of emergent SBO cases between 2005 and 2015 revealed infrequent utilization of laparoscopy compared to open approaches in surgical treatment. Reduction in postoperative morbidity and significantly shorter hospital stays were observed with laparoscopy compared to open intervention. In addition, laparoscopy was not associated with significant differences in odds of reoperation compared to open surgery.
