Comparison of outcomes after transcatheter vs surgical aortic valve replacement among patients at intermediate operative risk with a history of coronary artery bypass graft surgery: A post hoc analysis of the SURTAVI randomized clinical trial
JAMA Jun 26, 2019
Reardon MJ, et al. - Via a post hoc analysis of 273 intermediate-risk patients with prior coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery enrolled in a randomized clinical trial, researchers compared outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) vs surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) outcomes. In comparison to patients in the SAVR cohort, a greater mean improvement in those in the TAVR cohort in distance walked at 1 year was noted. In contrast to patients treated with SAVR, a significantly better mean summary score of the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire among patients who received TAVR at 30 days was noted. For intermediate-risk patients with aortic stenosis and prior CABG surgery, both TAVR and SAVR were observed as reliable techniques. Further, faster improvement in the quality of life and conventional exercise capacity at 1-year follow-up was aided through the transcatheter approach.
