Comparison of outcomes after carotid endarterectomy between type 2 diabetic and non-diabetic patients with significant carotid stenosis
Cardiovascular Diabetology Mar 29, 2019
Jeong MJ, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of 613 patients with significant carotid stenosis who had 675 carotid endarterectomies (CEAs), researchers assessed early and late outcomes between Korean type 2 diabetic vs non-diabetic patients. They also determined how overall incidence of cardiovascular events post-CEA was influenced by diabetes. The categories of CEAs were type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM; n = 265; 39.3%) and non-DM (n = 410; 60.7%). Perioperatively as well as within 4 years post-CEA, the incidence of fatal or nonfatal stroke or myocardial infarction or all-cause mortality (major adverse events [MAEs]) was determined. No greater risk of perioperative MAEs after CEA was found in diabetic patients; these patients did have a significantly greater risk of late MAE occurrence. Within 4 years following CEA, DM was found to independently confer risk for the occurrence of MAEs overall, especially stroke.
