Comparison of open and laparoscopic gastrectomy in elderly patients
Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery Mar 27, 2018
Kim SM, et al. - This study was planned to ascertain surgical outcomes of elderly patients older than 80 years who received laparoscopic or open gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Researchers also identified risk factors for postoperative complications. Elderly patients over 80 years were observed to have a high incidence of comorbidity, however, findings here suggested safety of performing gastric cancer surgery in this population. In these patients, the laparoscopic approach might be feasible for open surgery in improving quality of life, given a faster postoperative intestinal recovery period, with similar risk for postoperative complications.
