Comparison of hospital outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve implantation with vs without hypothyroidism
The American Journal of Cardiology Jun 13, 2018
Subahi A, et al. - Researchers used the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database to determine the impact of hypothyroidism on inpatient mortality, post-transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) complications, the length of hospital stay and the cost of hospitalization in patients with hypothyroidism who underwent TAVI between 2011 and 2014. To address potential confounding, they performed propensity score-matched analysis. They found that in patients with hypothyroidism and severe symptomatic aortic stenosis, it was feasible to perform TAVI. Furthermore, in this patient population, TAVI was found to be a relatively safe alternative with no significant increase in the risk of in-hospital mortality, or most post-procedural complications. However, post-TAVI hemorrhage requiring a blood transfusion was more likely to be seen among hypothyroid patients.
