Comparison of hearing preservation outcomes using extended vs single-dose steroid therapy in cochlear implantation
Otology & Neurotology Mar 20, 2020
Gotamco GL, et al. - In this case-control study, researchers contrasted the hearing preservation outcomes of patients who received extended vs single-dose steroid therapy in cochlear implant surgery. This investigation was conducted at tertiary referral centers from April 2017 to 2019 in Taiwan. The sample consisted of 70 patients aged 1 to 78 years old who received cochlear implantation through the round window approach. No significant difference was found in the complete hearing preservation rates between the extended and single-dose groups at 6 months postoperatively. In patients who undergo cochlear implantation, both extended and single-dose therapies result in good hearing preservation. Patients who underwent extended therapy, however, should expect improved impedances. In hearing preservation, a slower speed of insertion and a widely opened round window play a part.
