Comparison of Gabapentin and Doxepin in the management of uremic pruritus: A randomized cross‐over clinical trial
Dermatologic Therapy Nov 14, 2020
Haber R, Bachour J, Salloum A, et al. - Researchers undertook this single blind crossover randomized trial to compare Gabapentin and Doxepin in terms of efficacy and tolerability as therapeutic choices for hemodialysis patients with uremic pruritus. Patients were randomly assigned to receive 10 mg Doxepin daily or 100mg Gabapentin for 4 weeks and both groups were managed conversely for another 4 weeks following a 4‐week washout period. At baseline, mean scores of the 5‐D itch scale were identified to be 14.71 and 14.64, and decreased to 5.78 and 7.57 at week 4 in the Gabapentin and Doxepin groups, respectively. In these respective groups, mean scores of the DLQI at baseline were detected to be 9.6429 and 8.7857, and declined to 0.71 and 3.35 at week 4. Findings demonstrated a greater effectiveness of Gabapentin vs Doxepin in reducing uremic pruritus severity as well as improving quality of life of these patients.
