Comparison of endoscopy and radiographic imaging for detection of esophageal inflammation and remodeling in adults with eosinophilic esophagitis
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Oct 11, 2017
Nelson MJ, et al. - This study was designed to compare upper endoscopy (EGD) with barium upper gastrointestinal study (UGI) for the detection of esophageal inflammation and remodeling in adults with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Researchers identified EGD and UGI to have similar sensitivity for identifying the remodeling consequences of EoE, however, inflammatory features were better assessed on EGD. For composite features of EoE, UGI had inadequate sensitivity that limited its capabilities as a diagnostic test, although radiologists awareness significantly increases the diagnostic yield of UGI. In select patients, UGI and EGD could determine fibrostenotic changes unappreciated by its counterpart and thus provide complementary information.
