Comparison of disinfection effect between benzalkonium chloride and povidone iodine in nasotracheal intubation: A randomized trial
BMC Anesthesiology Sep 09, 2019
Sato-Boku A, Nagano K, Hasegawa Y, et al. - Among patients (n = 50; aged 20–70 years) grouped into categories 1 and 2 according to American Society of Anesthesiologists-physical status and were scheduled to undergo general anesthesia with NTI (nasotracheal intubation), researchers compared benzalkonium chloride with povidone iodine in terms of disinfection effects in nasotracheal intubation. Despite the reported inactivation or diffusion/dilution of both disinfectants over time, benzalkonium chloride not only maintained the threshold level but also provided longer antimicrobial effects when compared with povidone iodine, thus, offering a better sustained effect. The use of benzalkonium chloride for creating a hygienic nasotracheal intubation environment with sustained sterilizing effects was considered valid.
