Comparison of chlorhexidine–isopropanol with isopropanol skin antisepsis for prevention of surgical-site infection after abdominal surgery
British Journal of Surgery Apr 05, 2018
Harnoss JC, et al. - In a prospective controlled clinical trial, the benefit of combining antiseptic chlorhexidine with alcohol has been compared with alcohol-based skin preparation alone for prevention of surgical-site infection after abdominal surgery. Adding chlorhexidine to alcohol for skin antisepsis proved beneficial in reducing early surgical?site infection (SSI) compared with alcohol alone. On postoperative day 10, the incidence of superficial and deep SSIs was significantly different: 6·6% among those who received skin antisepsis with 2% chlorhexidine with 70% isopropanol and 12·3% in those who received skin antisepsis with 70% isopropanol.
