Comparison of cardiovascular health between US Army and civilians
Journal of the American Heart Association Jun 13, 2019
Shrestha A, et al. - Researchers compared 4 cardiovascular health metrics (current smoking, body mass index, blood pressure, and diabetic status) between active duty Army personnel (n=263,430, aged 17 to 64 years) and a corresponding subset of the noninstitutionalized, civilian US population from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011 to 2012. According to the findings, the prevalence of ideal cardiovascular health was less in the Army than NHANES group, although the least healthy recruits were removed. In both the Army and NHANES groups, a low prevalence of ideal body mass index and blood pressure was reported, even at early adult ages. In view of these findings, there is a requirement to promote, preserve, and improve ideal cardiovascular health, via policy changes, in both the Army and the US population as a whole.
