Comparison of cancer control between segmentectomy and wedge resection in patients with clinical stage non–small cell lung cancer 1A
The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Nov 19, 2020
Tsutani Y, Handa Y, Shimada Y, et al. - In patients with clinical stage IA non–small cell lung cancer, researchers aimed at comparing cancer control between segmentectomy and wedge resection. They assessed 457 patients with clinical stage IA (8th edition) non–small cell lung cancer who underwent either wedge resection or segmentectomy at three institutions between 2010 and 2015. Findings revealed significantly lower cumulative incidence of recurrence in patients undergoing segmentectomy (5-year cumulative incidence of recurrence, 5.3%) vs those undergoing wedge resection (5-year cumulative incidence of recurrence, 19.1%). Relative to wedge resection, segmentectomy resulted in better cancer control. Based on findings, segmentectomy is suggested to be the preferred oncologic procedure for sublobar resection to manage clinical stage IA non–small cell lung cancer.
