Comparison of calcaneal quantitative ultrasound and bone densitometry parameters as fracture risk predictors in type 2 diabetes mellitus
Diabetic Medicine Nov 21, 2019
Lasschuit JWJ, et al. - Researchers examined the utility of calcaneal quantitative ultrasound vs bone densitometry (DXA) in predicting incident low-trauma fracture in type 2 diabetes. In this retrospective cohort study, they assessed a subset of participants in the Dubbo Osteoporosis Epidemiology Study who underwent calcaneal quantitative ultrasound as well as DXA measurement, comprising 809 people without type 2 diabetes and 96 with type 2 diabetes. Findings revealed comparable efficacy of broadband ultrasound attenuation and femoral neck BMD in predicting low trauma incident fracture in type 2 diabetes. Several advantages are offered by calcaneal quantitative ultrasound over DXA and they recommend considering it in further studies of bone health screening or in clinical practice where DXA is unavailable.
