Comparison of as-needed and scheduled posthospitalization follow-up for children hospitalized for bronchiolitis: The Bronchiolitis Follow-up Intervention Trial (BeneFIT) Randomized Clinical Trial
JAMA Jul 10, 2020
Coon ER, Destino LA, Greene TH, et al. - Among parents of children hospitalized for bronchiolitis, researchers conducted this open-label, noninferiority randomized clinical trial to ascertain if an as-needed posthospitalization follow-up visit is noninferior to a scheduled posthospitalization follow-up visit with respect to reducing anxiety. Of 304 randomized children (median age, 8 months; interquartile range, 3-14 months; 179 [59%] male), 269 patients (88%) had the primary outcome available. An as-needed posthospitalization follow-up visit is noninferior to a scheduled posthospitalization follow-up visit with respect to reducing parental anxiety among parents of children hospitalized for bronchiolitis. Such outcomes support as-needed follow-up as an effective posthospitalization follow-up strategy. In the absence of specific concerns, physicians may advise as-needed follow-up to parents of children hospitalized for bronchiolitis.
