Comparison of anticoagulation regimens for pregnant women with prosthetic heart valves: A meta-analysis of prospective studies

Wang J, et al. – Researchers aimed to determine the comparative anticoagulation efficiency and feto–maternal complications of heparin and warfarin in the first trimester. For this purpose, they conducted a meta–analysis and found that evidence was indicative of the capability of warfarin in providing better protection for the mother, however, teratogenic effects might be overestimated. Data also indicated an association of heparin with severe adverse maternal outcomes, including mortality; heparin use did not ensure better fetal outcomes.
