Annals of Epidemiology Oct 04, 2017

Aranmolate R - The comparison of the prevalence of abnormal cholesterol in children, adolescents, and adults based on gender and ethnicity was examined in this review. As compared to the female, the level of low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) was higher in children, adolescent, and adult male population while high total cholesterol was higher in the female than the male which could be correlated with elevated risk of cardiovascular diseases.

  • For this study, a complex, multistage probability sampling method was used.
  • At a significant level of p< 0.05, a t test statistical analysis was used to check for variation in the groups.
  • The study obtained the outcomes of total cholesterol and low high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and compared in children, adolescent and adult with diverse groups.
  • To measure the prevalence of abnormal cholesterol among the participants, frequency distribution were used.

Results

  • From 20 years and beyond, there were over 18% of adults who had low HDL cholesterol.
  • While about 10% of women had low HDL, 27.9% of men had reduced HDL.
  • In comparison, 13.4% of children and adolescent had reduce level of HDL.
  • Furthermore, while girls had 12%, boys had low HDL of 14.8%.
  • For adult living in the U.S, the total high cholesterol was 12% while non-Hispanic black was 8.6%, 12.5% for non-Hispanic white and 13.1% was seen in Hispanic adults.
