Comparison of 30-day unplanned readmissions to the index vs non-index hospital after percutaneous coronary intervention
The American Journal of Cardiology Feb 18, 2020
Kwok CS, Kalra A, Velagapudi P, et al. - Researchers assessed the rates, reasons, as well as results for unplanned readmissions after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) based on whether the patients were admitted to the index or non-index hospital. From the US Nationwide Readmission Database, they selected patients receiving PCI between 2010 and 2014 and analyzed these patients for unplanned readmissions at 30 days to index and non-index hospitals. Overall, they examined 2,183,851 procedures. Among patients readmitted to the index vs non-index hospital, lower non-cardiac readmissions were reported. Findings revealed that most of the readmissions post-PCI were to the index hospital that the PCI was undertaken, and the probability of having a readmission diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction and undergoing a repeat PCI was more in these patients but they had less likelihood of dying, relative to patients admitted to a non-index hospital.
