Comparison of 3 treatment strategies for medication overuse headache: A randomized clinical trial
JAMA Sep 18, 2020
Carlsen LN, Munksgaard SB, Nielsen M, et al. - Researchers aimed at comparing following three treatment strategies for medication overuse headache (MOH): (1) withdrawal plus preventive treatment, (2) preventive treatment without withdrawal, or (3) withdrawal with optional preventive treatment 2 months after withdrawal. In this randomized clinical trial, 120 patients with MOH were randomized to receive 1 of the 3 outpatient treatments. All 3 treatment strategies were identified as effective. However, best results were achieved in correlation with withdrawal and preventive medication, with a mean reduction of 12.3 headache days per month. Based on these findings, they recommend using withdrawal and preventive medication from the start of withdrawal for managing MOH.
