Comparison between software volumetric breast density estimates in breast tomosynthesis and digital mammography images in a large public screening cohort
European Radiology Dec 16, 2018
Förnvik D, et al. - Researchers analyzed digital mammography (DM) and breast tomosynthesis (BT) images of 9909 females from 2010–2015 to compare software (prototype) estimates of volumetric breast density (VBD) based on BT projections to those based on DM images in the Malmö Breast Tomosynthesis Screening Trial (MBTST), a large screening cohort. Between BT and two-view DM, they compared volumetric breast density (VBD) and also with radiologists’ BI-RADS density 4th ed. scores. They also examined the correlation with weighted kappa (κ), Spearman’s correlation coefficient (r), and Bland–Altman analysis. A high correlation between continuous VBD in DM and BT was observed with an abundant agreement between software breast density categories in DM and BT and moderate agreement between radiologists’ BI-RADS scores and software breast density categories in DM and BT.
