Comparison between epidural and opioid analgesia for infants undergoing major abdominal surgery
Paediatric Anaesthesia Jun 28, 2019
Martin LD, et al. - Via this retrospective cohort study of infants (<12 months) who underwent exploratory laparotomy, ureteral reimplantation, or bladder exstrophy repair, researchers reviewed their experience of using an epidural catheter for reducing anesthetic and opioid exposure and improving postoperative analgesia. They identified 158 infants as eligible for this study; of these, they included 82 and placement of the epidural catheter was reported in 47. Reception of epidural was associated with decreased long-acting opioid requirements intraoperatively among infants undergoing major abdominal surgery. However, epidural placement was not identified precluding opioid exposure, as opioids may be given for indications other than nociceptive pain in the difficult-to-assess postoperative infant.
