Comparing treatment patterns of hepatocellular carcinoma at academic centers and non-academic centers within the mountain region
American Journal of Surgery Sep 30, 2019
Cheng D, Cross CL, Calfee G, et al. - Academic centers (ACs) were compared with non-academic centers (NACs) regarding the differences in survival and treatment approaches for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which may contribute to disparities in the Mountain Region (MR). Using the National Cancer Database, they divided HCC cases from 2004 to 2015 in the MR into AC and NAC subgroups. Improved survival, increased odds of surgery and decreases odds of positive margins were evident in correlation with HCC treatment at academic centers. The odds of positive margins were higher in correlation with a laparoscopic approach for HCC. The odds of receiving any treatment or surgery for HCC were high in relation to any insurance.
