Comparing the 5-year diabetes outcomes of sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass: The National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORNet) Bariatric Study
JAMA May 23, 2020
McTigue KM, Wellman R, Nauman E, et al. - In this large multicenter study involving 9,710 patients (median [interquartile range] follow-up time, 2.7 [2.9] years; 7,051 female patients [72.6%]; mean [SD] age, 49.8 [10.5] years; mean [SD] BMI, 49.0 [8.4]; 6,040 white patients [72.2%]), researchers compared the correlations of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) with time to diabetes remission. This investigation was carried out in 34 US health system sites in the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network Bariatric Study. They involved adult patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) who underwent bariatric surgery between January 1, 2005, and September 30, 2015. The authors discovered that patients with RYGB had higher weight loss, a slightly higher rate of T2DM remission, less T2DM relapse, and better long-term glycemic control over those with SG. Such results may help inform patient-centered surgical decision-making.
