Comparing robotic and trans-sternal thymectomy for early-stage thymoma: A propensity score-matching study
European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Aug 17, 2018
Marulli G, et al. - The surgical and oncological results after robotic thymectomy vs median sternotomy for early-stage thymoma were evaluated. Researchers analyzed 164 patients with early-stage thymoma (Masaoka I and II) who were operated on by median sternotomy (108 patients) or the robotic approach (56 patients) between 1982 and 2017. For early-stage thymoma, robotic thymectomy has been proved as a technically safe and feasible procedure with low complication rate and shorter hospital stay compared to the trans-sternal approach. Due to the reduced hospital stay, the robotic procedure exhibit lower expenses. Comparable oncological outcomes were noted, but with the requirement for longer follow-up.
