Comparing outcomes of concurrent chemotherapy regimens in patients 65 years or older with locally advanced oropharyngeal carcinoma
Cancer Oct 11, 2018
Amini A, et al. - Researchers used the linked Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results–Medicare database to compare the efficacy of concurrent chemoradiation with cisplatin (CDDP), carboplatin, or cetuximab (CTX) in patients with locally advanced oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Participants were compared with respect to patient and disease profiles, mortality, toxicity, and overall cost. Two-year overall survival (OS) was mainly analyzed. Findings demonstrated improved OS in patients treated with CDDP. The investigators also noted slightly lower overall costs and higher antiemetic usage and hospital visit rates in association with CDDP treatment, although a strong selection bias was observed because those receiving CTX and carboplatin were older and had higher comorbidity scores.
