Comparing inhaled medications reported by adolescents with persistent asthma and their caregivers
Journal of Asthma Jul 12, 2019
Frey SM, et al. - Researchers compared inhaled asthma medications (rescue and controller) reported by adolescents with persistent asthma and their caregivers, to determine the concordance (agreement) between the two. They assessed concordance particular to controller medications as well as investigated if concordance over controller medications within caregiver/teen dyads is related to demographics or clinical outcomes. As for overall number of inhaled medications reported, disconcordance in reporting was found in 132 (63%) of 210 dyads (79% public health insurance, 61% Black teens). Different numbers of inhaled medications were identified by most dyads, with substantial disagreement over controller medications. Education past high school was reported by fewer caregivers from dyads with controller medication discordance than concordant dyads. In persistent childhood asthma, successful self-management could be promoted by acquiring a basic understanding of treatment plans.
