Comparing axillary and rectal temperature measurements in very preterm infants: A prospective observational study
Neonatology Apr 02, 2021
Cho M, Kim CY, Lee JB, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for assessing the agreement between axillary temperature (AT) and rectal temperature (RT) measurements in very preterm infants. Preterm infants < 32 weeks of gestational age were prospectively involved. From day 1 to day 6, the infants’ body temperature (BT) was assessed twice a day. Six paired axillary and rectal measurements were taken on each of the 80 infants. The gestational age differed from 22 to 31 weeks (mean 28 weeks). Environmental factors such as incubator temperature, humidity, phototherapy, and the use of invasive mechanical ventilation had no effect on the differences between AT and RT measurements. In very preterm infants, AT measurements cannot be used interchangeably with RT measurements.
