Comparative severity of influenza A and B infections in hospitalized children
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Feb 28, 2020
Mattila JM, et al. - Given influenza A viruses vs B viruses are conventionally considered to result in more severe illnesses, but the clinical severity of A and B infections in hospitalized children has been compared in few studies with long observation periods, and therefore, researchers assessed the clinical presentation, results as well as treatment of all children < 16 years old admitted to Turku University Hospital, Finland, with virologically verified influenza A or B infection during the 14-year span of 1 July 2004 to 30 June 2018. In terms of clinical characteristics or outcomes, management, treatment at intensive care unit or length of stay, no significant differences were evident between children with influenza A and B, whether examined by age group or in all children. Findings revealed similar clinical severity of influenza A and B infections among children. In children, it appears justified to use quadrivalent vaccines comprising both lineages of B viruses in order to afford optimal protection against severe influenza illnesses.
