Comparative safety of sulfonylureas and the risk of sudden cardiac arrest and ventricular arrhythmia
Diabetes Care Feb 14, 2018
Leonard CE, et al. - The association between individual antidiabetic sulfonylureas and outpatient-originating sudden cardiac arrest and ventricular arrhythmia (SCA/VA) was investigated in this study. Compared with glipizide, glyburide could be associated with a lower risk of SCA/VA, consistent with a very small clinical trial suggesting that glyburide could reduce ventricular tachycardia and isolated ventricular premature complexes. Taking into account the putative effects of different sulfonylureas on other cardiovascular endpoints, cerebrovascular endpoints, all-cause death, and hypoglycemia, this potential benefit ought to be contextualized.
