Comparative outcomes of epidural steroids vs placebo after lumbar discectomy in lumbar disc herniation: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology Jun 02, 2018
Arirachakaran A, et al. - Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing outcomes (efficacy and complications) of epidural steroid (ES) application and placebo after discectomy in lumbar disc herniation. They conducted this systematic review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. As per the findings, the two groups did not demonstrate any significant differences in complications. Lower back and leg pain, morphine consumption and hospital stay were analyzed without any significant difference in complications for ES application following lumbar discectomy in lumbar disc herniation. Regarding surgical approaches with MIS compared to the conventional approach, findings suggested that post-operative morphine consumption could be reduced by the ES when the surgical approach was conventional, but not for MIS.
