Comparative morbidity profile of elective vs therapeutic neck dissection
Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Apr 23, 2021
Dunlap Q, Gardner JR, Ederle A, et al. - Since neck dissection (ND) is one of the most commonly performed procedures in head and neck surgery, researchers conducted this retrospective chart review to compare the morbidity of elective ND (END) vs therapeutic ND (TND). From January 2015 to December 2018, 373 NDs performed were analyzed. Patients with radical ND or inadequate chart documentation were disqualified. A total of 224 men (60%) were investigated, with a mean age of 60 years. While the significantly higher rate of structure sacrifice in the TND population indicates a higher morbidity profile in these patients, no significant difference in the rate of surgical complications was found between groups. The significant difference between groups in terms of radiation history and endocrine pathology is most likely due to selection bias.
