Comparative immunovirological and clinical responses to antiretroviral therapy between HIV-1 group O and HIV-1 group M infected patients
Clinical Infectious Diseases Mar 21, 2020
Kouanfack C, Unal G, Schaeffer L, et al. - As there is limited knowledge concerning the influence of genetic divergence of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 group O (HIV-1/O) relative to HIV-1 group M (HIV-1/M) on therapeutic outcomes, researchers here investigated if there are similar responses to standardized combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) between groups despite strain divergence. In this open nonrandomized study, inclusion of 47 HIV-1/O+ and 94 HIV-1/M+ patients was done. These were provided cART based on 2 nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors plus 1 ritonavir-boosted protease inhibitor. As per data gained, HIV-1/O+ and HIV-1/M+ patients exhibit similar immunovirological and clinical response. Further, they noted significantly lower baseline replication for HIV-1/O variants, implying specific virological properties and physiopathology that are required to be addressed.
