Comparative evaluation of postoperative pain and success rate after pulpotomy and root canal treatment in cariously exposed mature permanent molars: A randomized controlled trial
Journal of Endodontics Oct 26, 2017
Galani M, et al. - The physicians compared postoperative pain and success rate following pulpotomy and root canal treatment in this randomized controlled trial. For the management of symptomatic permanent teeth with deep caries lesions, pulpotomy could be an alternative treatment.
Methods- The physicians randomly divided 54 permanent teeth with carious exposures equally into 2 groups.
- By using standardized protocols, mineral trioxide aggregate pulpotomy was performed in the experimental group and root canal treatment was performed in the control group.
- They restored the treated teeth with a base of glass-ionomer cement followed by composite restoration.
- After intervention, the pain was recorded every 24 hours for 7 days.
- For 18 months, clinical and radiographic evaluations were done every 3 months.
- The data collected were statistically examined.
- The overall success rate was 85% in the pulpotomy group and 87.5% in the root canal treatment group (P > .05) at the end of follow-up.
- The physicians found a significant difference in pain incidence and pain reduction between the 2 groups (P < .05), with lower scores reported in the pulpotomy group.
