Comparative efficacy and acceptability of pharmacological, psychotherapeutic, and combination treatments in adults with posttraumatic stress disorder: A network meta-analysis
JAMA Sep 13, 2019
Merz J, et al. - Researchers compared pharmacological, psychotherapeutic, and combination treatment in treating adults with posttraumatic stress disorder via performing a network meta-analysis of 12 randomized clinical trials comprising 922 participants with 23 comparisons. The evidence gained was sparse and appeared not supporting the use of pharmacological therapy as first-line treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder; the three approaches appeared similar in terms of outcomes at the end of treatment. However, across 6 randomized clinical trials that reported follow-up data, psychotherapeutic and combined treatments resulted in superior long-term benefits compared with pharmacological treatments.
