Comparative effects of medical vs surgical weight loss on body composition: A pilot randomized trial
Obesity Surgery Apr 23, 2019
Varma S, et al. - The changes in regional distribution of fat mass and lean mass (LM) following surgical vs medical weight loss (MWL) were assessed in view of the known health risks associated with central adiposity. Fifteen persons with type 2 diabetes and body mass index (BMI) 30–39.9 kg/m2 in this 1:1:1 randomized trial had MWL, adjustable gastric banding (AGB), or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). AGB led to higher loss of LM and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) vs MWL at similar weight loss. Likewise, more VAT loss was achieved with RYGB.
