Comparative effectiveness of generic and brand-name medication use: A database study of US health insurance claims
PLoS Medicine Apr 05, 2019
Desai RJ, et al. – Researchers evaluated two databases—Optum Clinformatics Data Mart (2004–2013) and Truven MarketScan (2003–2015)—to assess the efficacy of generic medications vs branded medications. They noted similar clinical outcomes for brand-name products for chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, depression, and anxiety. The investigators suggested that their findings may be helpful in the development of educational interventions to address the negative perceptions of generic drugs among healthcare professionals and patients, and may also encourage awareness with respect to the equality between generic and branded medications.
