Comparative effectiveness of digital breast tomosynthesis for breast cancer screening among women 40-64 years old
Journal of the National Cancer Institute Apr 08, 2021
Richman IB, Long JB, Hoag JR, et al. - Researchers undertook this observational study to assess screening results with digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) in a real-world cohort, as well as to determine the population health effect of DBT as it is broadly employed. In females screened with 2 D mammography vs DBT, breast cancer screening results were examined. From a large, private health insurer, deidentified administrative data were utilized, and females 40–64 screened between January 2015 to December 2017 were included. Recall, biopsy, and incident cancers identified were the outcomes. This study involved 7,602,869 mammograms in 4,580,698 females, and DBT was received by 27.5% of these. A slightly lower recall rate than 2 D mammography as well as a higher biopsy and cancer detection rate were conferred by DBT in this large sample of privately insured females. It is still not known if this increased cancer detection results in improved clinical results.
