Comparative effectiveness and safety of bariatric procedures for weight loss: A PCORnet cohort study
Annals of Internal Medicine Dec 07, 2018
Arterburn D, et al. - In this retrospective observational cohort study conducted January 2005 to September 2015, researchers compared weight loss and safety among bariatric procedures among 65,093 patients (aged 20-79 years) with body mass index (BMI) measures of ≥ 35 kg/m2. Findings revealed that patients with diabetes, those with BMI <50 kg/m2, those aged ≥ 65 years, African American patients, and Hispanic patients lost less weight vs patients without those characteristics. They observed that adults lost more weight with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) vs with sleeve gastrectomy or adjustable gastric banding at 1, 3, and 5 years. However, RYGB had the highest 30-day rate of major adverse events. In addition, they found small subgroup differences in weight loss outcomes.
