Comparative cost‐effectiveness of mailed fecal immunochemical testing (FIT)–based interventions for increasing colorectal cancer screening in the Medicaid population
Cancer Aug 29, 2020
Wheeler SB, O’Leary MC, Rhode J, et al. - In the Medicaid population, mailed reminders supporting colorectal cancer (CRC) screening via fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) have been effective, so researchers assessed the cost‐effectiveness of such interventions and compared the effectiveness in increasing FIT screening of a reminder + FIT intervention vs a reminder‐only intervention. The trial and microcosting were derived from input data for a cohort of 35,000 unscreened North Carolina Medicaid enrollees aged 52 to 64 years. According to this cost‐effectiveness analysis of a randomized controlled trial, the reminder + FIT alternative was cost saving per additional Medicaid enrollee screened vs the reminder‐only alternative from the Medicaid/state perspective and probably cost‐effective from the health clinic/facility perspective. The findings also show that health departments and state Medicaid programs can increase CRC screening completion efficiently by mailing FIT kits to large numbers of Medicaid enrollees.
