Comparable surgical outcomes of abdominal aortic aneurysm repair in patients with and without Marfan syndrome
Journal of Vascular Surgery May 14, 2021
Kang J, Kim YW, Kim DK, et al. - Researchers performed a retrospective, single-center cohort study to compare the outcomes after open surgical repair (OSR) of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) in patients with and without Marfan syndrome (MFS). From 2003 to 2020, they reviewed and compared 28 patients with MFS and 426 patients without MFS who had undergone OSR for AAAs. The MFS patients were younger than the non-MFS patients at the AAA diagnosis. In addition, the proportion of women was greater for those with MFS. The AAAs were most often located at the infrarenal aorta in both groups, however, thoracoabdominal AAAs were more often found among patients with MFS. No significant variations were observed in 30-day or overall mortality between the patients with and without MFS during a median follow-up period of 71 months and 26.7 months, respectively. In a well-established MFS surveillance program, the surgical results of OSR for AAAs for patients with MFS were not substantially different from those for patients without MFS.
