Comorbidity of inflammatory bowel disease in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes
Acta Pediatrica Nov 02, 2020
Jasser‐Nitsche H, Pozza SBD, Binder E, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for determining the prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and describing patients with both diseases. Data of 65,147 patients with T1D ≤ 18 years of 379 centres in Germany and Austria partaking in the DPV initiative have been analyzed. Mean BMI‐SDS was lower in patients with T1D and IBD relative to patients with T1D alone. While steroids are taken more frequently by children and adolescents with T1D and IBD, they suffer more frequently from severe hypoglycaemia and have a lower BMI-SDS. Chronic intestinal inflammation leading to malabsorption, malnutrition, and increased severe hypoglycaemia could explain these findings. There were no variations in HbA1c levels, insulin dose and DKA incidence.
