Comorbidity of dementia and age-related macular degeneration calls for clinical awareness: A meta-analysis
British Journal of Ophthalmology Apr 26, 2019
Rong SS, et al. - In this study, researchers assessed data to study the relationship between dementia and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). They identified and evaluated individuals with dementia (OR ≥ 1.24, I2 ≤ 9%) or Alzheimer's disease (AD) (ORunadjusted=2.22; I2=50%) at risk for AMD—especially for late AMD (OR=1.37; I2=0). They also found that AMD was significantly correlated with enhanced risk of AD/cognitive impairment. Patients with AMD demonstrated poorer cognitive function vs controls, including Mini-Mental State Examination and Trail Making Test A.
