Comorbidity assessment for mortality risk stratification in elderly patients with acute coronary syndrome
European Journal of Internal Medicine Feb 06, 2019
Sanchis J, et al. - Given that the Charlson's is the most used comorbidity index, researchers conducted this study to simplify comorbidity assessment in elderly patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The study group consisted of one training and one testing cohort. Via multivariable analysis, the investigators evaluated comorbidities, selecting medical disorders other than cardiac disease that were independently associated with mortality. They observed that six comorbidities were predictive: renal failure, anemia, diabetes, peripheral artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, and chronic lung disease. According to findings, discrimination accuracy and calibration of the predictive model using the six comorbidities were similar to the predictive model using the Charlson index. In elderly patients with ACS, this simplified comorbidity assessment consisting of six comorbidities may offer useful risk stratification.
