Comorbidity as the dominant predictor of mortality after hip fracture surgeries

Osteoporosis International Dec 08, 2019

Cher EWL, et al. - In this retrospective study, a total of 1,004 individuals with hip fractures were involved in order to examine the relationships of surgical delay and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) with the risk of mortality and to ascertain the dominant predictor. A CCI score of 5, above which comorbidity at baseline showed a higher risk of mortality compared with a delay in surgery, was recognized as the inflection point. The analysis revealed that in comparison with delay in surgery, CCI is the dominant prognosticator of both short- and long-term mortality. Moreover, in individuals surgically treated for hip fractures, the influence of CCI was vital in the prediction of mortality.
