Comorbidity and long-term outcome in patients with congenital heart block and their siblings exposed to Ro/SSA autoantibodies in utero
Annals of Rheumatic Diseases Apr 18, 2019
Mofors J, et al. - Authors researched data from 119 subjects with congenital heart block (CHB) and their 128 siblings to investigate comorbidity and outcomes in subjects with CHB and their siblings. They found a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular comorbidity among people with CHB, with cardiomyopathy and/or heart failure observed in 20 (16.8%) patients vs 3 (0.3%) controls. An inclined risk of infections was also noticed in subjects with CHB. An association of pacemaker treatment with a decreased risk of cerebral infarction but increased risks of cardiomyopathy/heart failure and infection was also reported. An increased risk to develop any of 15 common autoimmune conditions was noticed in both patients with CHB and their siblings. They also recorded a higher risk of systemic connective tissue disorder in patients with CHB.
