Comorbidities in adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease: Findings from a population-based cohort study
Pediatric Research Dec 08, 2019
Ghersin I, et al. - In this study performed on Jewish Israeli adolescents who had a general health assessment before enlistment to the Israeli Defense Forces from 2002 to 2016, researchers examined the link of inflammatory bowel diseases with comorbidities at late adolescence. They examined overall 891 individuals (595 Crohn disease, 296 ulcerative colitis, median age 17.1 years) and 1,141,841 controls. The link of Crohn disease with arthritis, thyroid disease, atopic dermatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, nephrolithiasis, and pancreatitis, was revealed. The link of ulcerative colitis with arthritis, thyroid disease, autoimmune hepatitis, and pancreatitis was observed. They found primary sclerosing cholangitis was related to both diseases. In both diseases, no frequent development of asthma, celiac, type 1 diabetes, psoriasis, and bone fractures was noted. Male predominance was reported for most links. Link of both Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis with various comorbidities, not limited to autoimmune disorders, was revealed at adolescence.
