Comorbid obstructive sleep apnea and increased risk for sickle cell disease morbidity

Katz T, et al. - Researchers sought to gain an insight into the spectrum of sickle cell disease (SCD) complications related to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). For this purpose, they determined the rate of a broad range of SCD-related medical complications and found that presence of OSA was related to higher rates of a broad range of SCD complications, including pneumonia and acute chest syndrome, in children with SCD. SCD morbidity could be attenuated via routine screenings, diagnosis, and increased therapeutic intervention for children with comorbid OSA.
