Comorbid depressive symptoms and chronic medical conditions among US Chinese older adults

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Aug 17, 2019

Kong D, et al. - Using data from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly in Chicago (n = 3,157), researchers assessed the prevalence of comorbid depressive symptoms (DSs) and chronic medical conditions (CMCs) and the link between such comorbidity and health services use among US Chinese older adults in order to better understand the prevalence and health outcomes of comorbid DSs and CMCs among older ethnic minority populations. They stratified participants into four groups: neither DSs nor CMCs, DSs only, CMCs only, and comorbid DS-CMC. Across various CMCs, the prevalence of comorbid DSs ranged between 0.7% and 4.6%. Among US Chinese older adults with CMCs, the reported odds of DSs were at least twice as high as seen in those without the various conditions. More emergency department visits and hospitalizations were documented among US Chinese older adults with comorbid DS-CMC vs those with neither DSs nor CMCs. Increased policy and clinical attention are, therefore, warranted in order to identify and manage comorbid DS-CMC.
